Singapore Ranked Most Sustainable City in Asia

Singapore is ranked the most sustainable city in Asia 2018, followed by Hong Kong and Seoul, according to Sustainable Cities Index compiled by global consulting firm Arcadis. Singapore has the highest score in the profit sub-index for high levels of economic output, according to the 2018 Sustainable Cities Index by Arcadis.

While European cities dominate the top of the Index, three Asian cities made it to the top 20. Singapore comes in at #4, followed by Hong Kong (#9) and Seoul (#13).

A common challenge among developed cities is affordability, notably related to housing in land-scare cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong. As the Singapore government's measures to cool off property prices began to have an impact, the city-state’s affordability should further improve in the foreseeable future.

The Sustainable Cities Index ranks 100 global cities on three pillars of sustainability: People, Planet and Profit. The three pillars are closely aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research also features new work on city archetypes and clusters aimed at explaining the implications of a citizen experience showing a close correlation to the SCI rankings. The four city clusters used are based on an analysis of the citizen experiences of city living combined with the Index data.
